Military Experience
On October 3, 1942, Russell Lowell Grossnickle Jr. enlisted into the United States Army Air Force. He trained to become a pilot at the Buckingham Army Airfield in Fort Myers, Florida. He was apart of the Headquarters Squadron, 38th Fighter Group as a cadet.

On January 22, 1944, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Russell Jr. was traveling on from the Buckingham Army Airfield collided with a fight plane from a sub-base of the Buckingham Army Airfield in Naples, Florida. The Flying Fortress crashed into the Gulf of Mexico following the collision.
